How To Test the Amount of Infrared Light in Your Blue Violet Laser Pointer
Laser Pens, such as a blue violet laser pointer pen have become staples in homes all over the world. While there are many different useful applications for a violet laser pointer, there are also many dangers these devices can cause. Hazards from blindness to fire are some of the many things that can occur when a blue laser pointer is used incorrectly or is defective. This is why it is important to know how to test the safety of your blue violet laser pointer as well as know some of the safety precautions that should be taken.
The test to determine the safety of your violet laser pointer is actually quite simple and can actually be fun. The only items you need is a digital camera or webcam, an old CD, two paper cups, a piece of paper and of course your blue violet laser pointer. The way this works is you cut notches in the paper cups so that the blue laser pointer can sit on top and push the laser through a piece of paper. On the other side of the paper, put the CD on the cup so it is standing straight up with the shiny part facing the laser. The only other thing is to position the camera so it is in front of the violet laser pointer.
When you turn on the camera, you will then start the blue violet laser pointer. It is important not to look at the beam or even at the reflection of the beam in the CD. These camera are able to pick up infrared light and will be able to tell you if your violet laser pointer is emitting dangerous amounts of infrared light.
When you are using a blue laser pointer, be it for an experiment such as the one above or even for some sort of professional activity, it is important to make sure you are following proper safety precautions. One of the most important things to do is make sure you do not aim the laser in anyones eyes, even through a mirror. Even just a low 5mw blue violet laser pointer can damage someone's eyes if pointed in them for more than a few seconds. With this, it is also important that you are aware of the strength of your violet laser pointer. Strong lasers can cause fires and you want to make sure you will not do any damage while operating your device.
