Hi! I have three questions on chemistry that I cant answer--Pls Help!!!?
1. Iodine crystals will have the fastest rate of dissolution at :
A. 40oC (degrees celcius) water, stir 60 rpm, powdered crystals
B. 20oC ethanol, stir 40rpm, granules
C. 40oC ethanol, stir 20rpm, powdered
D. 100oC water, stir 60rpm, granules
Pls tell me which is the best ans and why.
2. How does the type of solute affect the solubility?
3.How can you seperate the suspension of sand and saw dust from and aqueous solution of sodium cloride? (I have to obtain sand, sawdust and sodium cloride seperately)
Pls tell me the answers! Im very desperate!
But how do you filter the sawdust and the sand seperately?
Answer:
1. I'll answer the question with a question: what variable(s) is/are more important? solvent polarity (water vs. ethanol), stirring speed (faster stirring = faster dissolving), surface area (more s.a. = powdered = faster dissolving), or temperature (hotter is usually faster).
2. Polarity. polar solutes dissolve in polar solvents. Nonpolar solutes dissolve in nonpolar solvents.
3. Let the sand settle out. pour off / decant the mixture of sawdust/salt/water.
4. Filter the sawdust. Save the filtrate.
5. Filter the sand. Save the filtrate.
6. Combine the filtrates, evaporate off the water to give HaCl.
