Tempered glass is glass that has gone through rapid heating and cooling during the manufacturing process to strengthen its hardness. Tempered glass is five to seven times stronger than regular glass, and is considered a durable material that can withstand use in the house.
Measurements: Glass vessel sinks are usually a ¼ to ¾ inches thick, fifteen to twenty-one inches wide, and nine inches deep. They mostly come in circular or ovular designs but are offered in rectangular and square shapes as well. Some manufacturers do sell fourteen inch glass vessel bathroom sinks and some can even custom make above average sizes. It is advised that there should be between fifteen to twenty inches of space around the glass vessel sink to prevent users from leaning on the sink and potentially cracking it.
Budget: Glass bathroom sinks are considered luxury basins, and can range in price anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to a couple of thousand dollars. There are online retailers that sell glass vessel bathroom sinks for as low as one-hundred dollars though.
Functionality: Glass sinks are extremely stylish and trendy but you have to consider how functional it will be in your home. why is it difficult to design glass products using fused glass?
Answer:
It isn't. Glass can be molded into any workable shape and fused to any known material with little difficulty. There is even an entire section of glass science devoted to the use of sealing glasses for making rigid connections between glass and other materials.
If you are referring specifically to fused glass as "fused silica" then the difficculty is in melting the silica. Fused silica is a term reserved for truely SiO2 glass. Melting silica requires temperatures in excess of 2000 C, which is well beyond the means of commercial melters. There are short cuts to making this glass such as leaching of a heat treated spinodally phase seperated sodium borosilicate glass and sintering the remaining porous silica body.
