Perceived as the basic form of art, music employs sound as its medium; harmony, rhythm, tempo, pitch, and melody are components of music. Music plays an important role in every country’s culture; it has been used for entertainment, religious expression, and a lot more.
Spain has a very unique tradition because of its geographical characteristics and because of the many foreign influences that has shaped their culture over the centuries; you can find this in the styles of architectural structures that vary from one era to another, and on the unique techniques in paintings as well as music and dance. The Visigoths also arrived in Spain, after them were the Jews and the Moors; these various influences have led to Spain’s diverse musical styles and form. Flamenco, which comes from Spain is famous world wide and is regarded to be widely known in all regions of Spain. On the contrary, Flamenco is only popular just in one area of Spain; an autonomous community in Spain called Andalusia, which is considered the largest in terms of land area in the country. The neighboring regions surrounding Andalusia have unque music for the number of countries that truly shaped Spain’s culture and music.
Probably one of the main reasons why Flamenco was not so famous is that it is said to be an influence to Andalusia by the gypsies which have never really been a famous group to people all over the world. During the time when Flamenco first became known in the Andalusian regions, that area was the poorest and one of the most neglected regions in Spain. Flamenco also symbolizes the complex music and culture of Spain; however, researches exploring the origins of Flamenco until today have inconclusive findings.
Flamenco came from the lower levels of society in Andalusia; it was a turbulent time and a lot of people have biases against Gypsies, which many believe have an influence on the origins of Flamenco. Other studies have resulted have brought historians to regard that Flamenco is a mix of gypsy dance and the descendant of Moorish music during the 8th century until the 17th century; in addition, experts also believe that a section from the gypsy and Moorish influence, Byzantine church music, and music of Indi and Egypt played an essential part in shaping Flamenco. It’s not a wonder that the historians and government officials of Spain weren’t curious enough in recording the minute things since they regarded the region to be a poor one and the dance form as not worth recording at all. Add to that the detail that since the lower classes were mostly illiterate, most of the history and practice of Flamenco was passed on through oral tradition; it’s passed on from generation to generation so it’s only natural that it has transformed several times from its original form which is forever lost to historians of this generation.
Even in this generation, researchers, historians and experts are still discussing and studying to pinpoint the exact history and beginnings of Flamenco; it’s not even known where Flamenco got its name. However one truth is still the same; it became a big influence on dance cultures all around the world.
