Collecting Murano Glass - what makes it so collectable?
Well, lets explain it in simplistic terms and it really is simple - it is the very best Art glass anywhere in the world! This seems like a bold and pretty strong statement to make but it is the only one that fits. Since the late 13th century, Murano Glass blowers skilled in the exceptionally difficult art of blown glass have been producing some of the most exquisite and highly decorative glass made anywhere in the world. The King of Italy in the very early years deliberately locked away the Murano master glass blowers on this island for fear of loosing the techniques and skills of his artisans to rival artists and countries. Very early on, companies and styles of Murano Art Glass became popular and exported all over the world. The most recognisable of these was a style called FACON DE VENISE of the 16th and 17th centuries, with exceptionally delicate stemmed goblets and glassware that now, are some ofthe rarest and most collected of any style of Murano glass.
Just why is it so difficult to make Murano glass? Well, if you consider that in order to be given the title of Maestro or Master Glass blower, you must serve a minimum of 15 years and up to 20 before you are even considered for this most elusive and highly regarded title. The secrets and modern techniques of the modern Murano maestro are still kept highly secret with the composition of the glass, kiln temperatures and other information kept close to the chests of the various companies that produce this most brilliant of any hand blown glass in the world.
The range and diversity of what is available in Murano glass is simply only limited by ones imagination. From Horses to Fish, Vases, Jewelry, Chandeliers and interior lighting such as Table lamps, wall sconces and Floor lamps. To museum quality modern interpretations of centuries old designs such as hand painted Veronese vases decorated with 24 carat gold and sumptuously painted cartouches depticing Italian, Roman and 18th century lovers. Other designs such as classical Murano glass art such as blown glass ships based on 16th century Italian vessels.
Murano glass and crystal chandeliers include styles such as the Classical chandelier, Ca Rezzonico Chandelier, Retro chandelier, Opaline chandelier, Floral chandelier, Fruit chandelier and more. Having a Murano glass chandelier in your home make and indelible statement of superior quality and world class reputation. Techniques that you will find include Incalmo, Filligrana, Murrine, Coroso, Battuto and more. The difficulty and time it takes to truly master these techniques is something that only time can provide. Some of the more established Murano glass blowing companies to look for are VENINI, Salviati and Barovier and Toso. Their are Maestros such as Lina Tagliapietra, Afro Celotto, Luca Vidal, Oscar Zanetti and Arnaldo Zanella who produce limited edition and one-off pieces that can never be reproduced due to the exceptional difficulty of creating just one piece. The range of skill and technical expertise of not only the centuries old glass blower, but also the Modern Murano master glass blower is a set of techniques that deserve and command the very highest of accolades.
