Take A Flight To Amsterdam And Explore The Neighbourhoods Where The Tourists Don't Go
The city of Amsterdam has plenty of well known attractions to draw the tourist crowds, from its award-winning waterways to historical attractions such as the Anne Frank House. But just off the main tourist trails lie neighbourhoods that quietly impress with otherworldly architecture and multicultural markets. Experience a new side to the Dutch capital when you take a flight to Amsterdam on holiday.
Eastern Islands: Futuristic architecture
You could be forgiven for thinking that you've stepped into another city when you head away from the gabled houses that typify Amsterdam's city centre and investigate its Eastern Islands instead. In this futuristic district of man-made islands, the poker-straight waterways mimic the angular lines of the architecture. Take in the scenery by bike and pedal past the multi-textured apartment blocks in the Java Eiland area or the innovative steel and brick complexes on KNSM Eisland. Coast down Veemkade for stellar views of the islands across the IJ Harbour then sip coffee at the trendy but relaxed Star Ferry Cafe inside the glass-and-steel concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.
Amsterdam Noord: The heart of the underground art scene
Amsterdam Noord transports you from the bustle of the busy city centre into another world. The largely sedate, residential area is separated from the city centre by a wide expanse of water (the Het IJ). Rent a bike and cross over on the free ferry behind the station. Located on the northern bank, you'll find the edgy art community Kinetisch Noord at the NDSM Werf. This is where you can experience the best of Amsterdam's underground cultural scene. The shipyard that the community has made its home offers appropriate artistic inspiration - it holds over 100 studios, a skateboard hall and theatres. MTV have even established their European headquarters here. Although you can’t enter most of the buildings, wander the complex, taking in the ever-changing junk street art, such as a sculpture of a man-demon made from old bikes and styrofoam. North of the NDSM Werf, the scenery changes and streets take on a residential village feel. Ta ke in your surroundings over a drink at Cafe 't Sluisje before heading on with your Amsterdam adventure.
Oosterpark and around: Multicultural flavours
Visitors seeking an international flavour to their shopping should head to Dappermarkt, located in the pretty surroundings of Oosterpark. Between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday the area between Mauritskade and Wijttenbachstraat springs to life with a bazaar reflecting the cultures of local African and Turkish communities. Pick up handmade jewellery, snacks or fresh produce as you wander in amongst the stalls. The popular cafe Roopram Roti is the place to go to enjoy a range of treats - the Surinamese stuffed flatbreads come highly recommended.
Western Islands: Peaceful strolls and petite drawbridges
Just west of Amsterdam Centraal and North of the Jordaan, this quiet residential area, spread across a series of interconnected islands, is a scenic spot for peaceful strolls. Here you can relax and unwind in the peaceful surroundings, recharging your batteries after your flight to Amsterdam. Wander the cobbled streets and admire the diminutive white-painted drawbridges that link the islands. The prettiest is the narrow Drieharingenbrug (Three Herrings Bridge), which connects the isles of Prinseneiland and Realeneiland. As you admire the bridge don't forget to take in your surroundings, including the winding canals and ancient gabled houses.
Whatever your tastes you are bound to find plenty to inspire and entertain you. Book a flight to Amsterdam and see where locals relax away from the tourist throngs.
