There Is An Elephant In The School Yard
Monkeys scampering on the school rooftop, holding art class in Red Square, an impromptu visit by an elephant, and taking a class into the rainforest. These are just a few of the everyday experiences of teachers working in international schools around the world.
Europe and Teaching Jobs
And it’s not just young, single teachers who are making the career move. Rudi Powell from Penarth, South Wales reached the age of retirement before heading off first in Vienna and then in Rotterdam. He says that had he known, he would have done it earlier in his career, and would absolutely do it again. Wife and husband Lorna and Kevin Gallagher were also able to enjoy the experience of teaching jobs abroad. After a very good teaching career in South Korea and Poland, the couple currently live in Italy because they are teaching at the International School of Bologna.
Teaching Jobs Overseas
The move usually includes the entire family. “Travelling with our young children was very easy. As a family we’ve grown up with international life; it’s a very positive and rewarding experience, giving our girls a very mature, global and compassionate point-of-view,” says Jeff Burt, a Physics teacher from London who lived and taught in the Philippines, in Turkey and in Sri Lanka along with his wife and two daughters. For single parents it works too: “I knew I would like to work in an international school and waited for what I thought was the right time for my children,” explains Janice Ireland who taught in international schools in Kuwait, Cairo, Libya and The Netherlands for twelve years. “My son was in university at the time and my daughter tagged along with me and did her A-levels in the same school as I worked. She absolutely loved it! As a single working woman, I cannot even compare the differences to life back home. It’s been a really good thing for me and my family and I would absolutely recommend it.”
Another teacher who taught for many years in international schools is Andrew Wigford.
”Having overseas teaching jobs meant that I am given the chance to travel to some amazing destinations and at the same time get to work in some terrific schools in Austria, Germany, and Colombia.”
“We decided to have a go at teaching overseas for a couple of years, but loved it so much that we kept working abroad for 16 years!
During our time abroad, our two children were born but that was no problem at all. The truth is it’s given our whole family a sense of adventure, great trust in travelling and a bigger perspective of the world.”
The only obstacle with working overseas was getting a new job says Andrew. ”Me and my wife, and a several of our work colleagues disliked the cattle-market style of the huge recruitment fairs. When we tried to apply for a job on our own, it was tough to determine which of the schools were highly reputable, and what paperworks were needed. “My wife and I, including some work colleagues attempted to look for jobs our-selves but we had a hard time determining which of the schools had a good reputation and the paperwork involved. We were not fond of the cattle-market style offered by big recruitment fairs. We also heard a couple of quite scary stories about teachers who had been let down by untrustworthy, unaccredited schools. The personal service offered by recruitment consultancies is one reason why we prefer to transact with them.”
